Contract Description:

Our brief was to create a rear studio mews extension onto Bellshaugh Lane connected to an existing stone villa on Cleveden Drive. Our design had to comply strictly to tight Planning Guidelines, heights and traditional materials and meet our artist client’s brief for light open spaces and connections onto the private rear garden and views to the open parkland.

A one and a half storey studio space is connected to the villa through a new lightweight cedar link. The main house entrance is altered and opens through a new gallery area into the extension. The studio has views directly to the private garden. 3 bi-fold glass doors push back to create a large indoor/outdoor south facing dining area. Frame less glass windows look out onto the park. Structural channels supporting the upper mezzanine are left exposed in the main studio and are expressed using a dark grey paint. Full ridge roof clerestory glazing is used to complete the feeling of space.

The new garage from Bellshaugh Lane has a bedroom directly above it. To achieve head height in the bedroom a lead dormer projects full width. A full height sliding cedar screen in the dormer allows uninterrupted views to the open parkland.
