Dunning Nursery

Contract: New Nursery School
Client: Dunning, Stirling
Contract Description: planning stage

The brief was to design a new nursery school for an ‘outdoor’ nursery school. The brief was to accommodate the different aged children in appropriately designed spaces for their age and development. The babies are housed in a shell-like building which nurtures and protects. The 2-3 year olds are in the hub/hearth of the nursery which is designed to allow more independent activity and play and acts as the transisson space between baby and independent child. The 3-5 year olds are accommodated in the ‘tree house’ which has glazed screens which open directly out on to the woodland for outdoor play and learning. Each ‘element’ is linked by glazed walkways which bring in light and the elevations are designed to be folding or sliding so that the building can open to outside whenever possible.

The building is constructed of environmentally friendly materials and sits in the contours of the hill to interact with the natural surrounding landscape and interact directly with nature. The essence of the brief for this development is to relate the building to the elements and the children will commune with nature.
